Pooling pearls of portfolio wisdom: promotion, preparation and practice

Johanna Jordaan, Svetlana King and Jenny McDonald

Portfolios have gained traction as a tool to facilitate reflective practice in higher education, post-graduate training, and professional development. In health professions education, portfolios (and reflection) can be met with resistance from students and practising clinicians alike.

Through this session, we intend to draw collective pearls of wisdom from those with experience in supporting learners to engage in portfolio-based learning and assessment. Specifically, we want to understand how participants address ‘the three Ps’ of portfolios (i.e., promotion, preparation, and practice) to develop a culture in which portfolios are embraced as a pathway to productive learning.

Discussion questions:

  • Promotion: How do we pitch and ‘sell’ the portfolio to learners and educators?
  • Preparation: How do we prepare learners and educators to engage with portfolios as a learning tool?
  • Practice: How can we facilitate ongoing use of portfolios into clinical practice?

Johanna is currently a Learning Coach Coordinator in the Flinders MD program. She has a medical background and more than 10 years’ experience in medical education. Johanna was responsible for implementing the Learning Coach initiative and introducing portfolios into the Flinders MD in 2017.

Svetlana works in the Flinders MD program as a Learning Coach Coordinator and coordinator of the research and scholarship theme. Additionally, she works in the Prideaux Discipline of Clinical Education and has done so since 2014. Svetlana has a background in secondary education.

Jenny is the academic lead of the portfolio and coordinator of the personal and professional development program at WSU. She is a community paediatrician with many years of experience in medical education.

PeArLS session style: The presenter and participants are equals who gather to discuss a common problem. The initial “presentation” be minimal (5 mins, 3 slides) and is framed around a challenging question or an issue that the presenter is grappling with.
