Meet one of our newest members, Melissa Arnold-Ujvari.

Melissa Arnold-Ujvari is currently a Director Pre-Registration Nursing  Programs within the Nursing School at the University of Adelaide and is in the final stages of completing her PhD.

"With over 30 years of experience as a renal nurse and university academic, my career has been dedicated to the advancement of health professional education. Beginning in Australia, where I developed a deep understanding of the complexities of kidney care I then transitioned into academia firstly in the UK and then Australia. I focused on resilience for nurses and First Nations health, working on curriculum development and mentoring future healthcare professionals. My aim has been to integrate practical experience with theoretical knowledge for comprehensive, culturally sensitive student education.

Being a member represents a community of passionate educators committed to excellence in health professional education. The association provides invaluable resources, networking opportunities, and professional development to continually enhance practice. ANZAHPE’s dedication to fostering innovative and collaborative educational environments perfectly aligns with my focus on First Nations health.

I heard about ANZAHPE through a colleague who spoke of the collaborative spirit within the community. Intrigued, I looked into the association and was impressed by its commitment to supporting health professional educators."

Congratulations to Paul McGurgan on his Fellowship with ANZAHPE.

After graduating from Trinity College Dublin in 1995, Paul wanted less sleep and more adrenalin in his life.... although he later found out that starting a family could have achieved the same result, he decided to become an obstetrician and gynaecologist. His career has given him the opportunity to work in 3 different countries' health care systems- Ireland, UK and Australia.

As the Assoc. Dean in UWA Medical School he coordinates the medical students’ professional development, wellbeing and mentoring programs. Paul’s research interests focus on medical (and medical student) professionalism, patient safety and student wellbeing.  He is the AMA(WA) state representative for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

If Paul had a fairy godmother, he would like one of his wishes to be to dispel all the rumours and fears related to health professionals and students being concerned about disclosing struggles with their mental health.

I decided to apply for ANZAHPE fellowship as I have greatly benefitted from being part of this community of practice, and hope I can give something back in this role. I do not think there is another organisation which matches the collegiality, breadth and depth of the membership in health professional education; and let’s face it, we have the best fun at ANZAHPE conferences.

Congratulations to Louise Allen on her Associate Fellowship with ANZAHPE.

Louise is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Medical Education (DME) at The University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Lecture at Monash University, and a Credentialing Consultant at Dietitians Australia.

My program of research focuses on continuing professional development, faculty development (both formal and informal), and evaluation. Specifically, my research is not limited to exploring outcomes or impacts of educational interventions; it acknowledges the importance of context and understanding how and why outcomes are occurring and what else is happening. In addition to research, I co-lead teaching and curriculum development of the research focused subjects in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Clinical Education.

I applied for Associate Fellowship with ANZAHPE because I see it as an extremely valuable organisation for growing, promoting, and uplifting health professions education research, scholarship, and practice in Australia and New Zealand. The supportive network that it creates, and the development it offers members are excellent and I want to contribute to that.

"I applied for Fellowship because ANZAHPE is my academic home and ANZAHPEANS are my people!"

Congratulations to Keri Moore on her revalidation of Fellowship with ANZAHPE.

I was a member of ANZAME in the 1990s and continued my involvement as it transitioned into ANZAHPE. I am honoured to have been recognised as an Associate Fellow and later as a Fellow, in acknowledgment of my leadership in the HTAG Clinical Education group. It has been a privilege to have that recognition recently reaffirmed. I also serve on the Fellowship Committee, where I am continually inspired by the calibre and commitment of applicants to the Fellowship program.

My academic background includes qualifications in higher education teaching, Allied Health clinical education, and law. I bring extensive research experience in clinical education outcomes and practice-readiness across osteopathy, chiropractic, and other allied health disciplines. I am currently affiliated with the University of the Sunshine Coast, where I tutor in Business Law. My current scholarly focus is in Health Law, particularly the intersection of Disciplinary and Business Law and Clinical Reasoning in the health professions. I have a strong understanding of contemporary regulatory and accreditation standards and am frequently invited to conduct Expert Reviews for TEQSA and AHPRA.

I joined ANZAHPE because I value being part of a community that promotes evidence-informed education, collaboration, and the continuous development of health professions education across Australia and New Zealand. Congratulations to Keryn Wright on her ANZAHPE Associate Fellowship

Keryn Wright is the Lecturer in Rural Workforce Development for the University of Melbourne and Manager of the Going Rural Health programme, Department of Rural Health (UoM-UDRH). Keryn has worked at multiple UDRHs, holds a Master of Clinical Education and has published in the fields of interprofessional and rural clinical education.

"My background is in critical care nursing and midwifery, with extensive experience in rural health education, and I am completing my PhD through UoM MDHS. My research, entitled “Learning environments in rural health: examining the elements to foster and sustain staff learning,” employs Video Reflexive Ethnographical (VRE) observation from a postmodern perspective.

My position is a leadership role in managing the GRH program and leading Interprofessional Education across the Department of Rural Health which includes leading the student placement team to ensure nursing and allied health student placements are supported in rural hospitals and community settings, service-learning placements are developed and implemented, education in rural health services is enhanced, partnerships are created with multiple universities, and education and training projects related to GRH are conducted. My goal is to integrate interprofessional education across nursing and allied health training and to collaborate with UDRH programs to identify and develop opportunities for interprofessional education and practice. I facilitate innovative nursing and allied health student placements and workforce development that address the needs of local communities and healthcare services, inspiring rural careers.

I was first introduced to ANZAHPE by my PhD supervisors, and from the very first time I attended, it was abundantly clear how supportive and welcoming the ANZAHPE community was. I could network with senior researchers from various disciplines who, until then, had only been names in journals, authoring my favourite papers. It was intimidating, but I was immediately put at ease and felt supported as a novice researcher. I received valuable and constructive advice and feedback on my presentations, writing, and how to structure my academic career. It was a genuine learning environment that I feel grateful to have had access to, and I would love the opportunity to ‘pay it forward’ because of how my research journey has been fostered. ANZAHPE is my ‘must-attend’ conference (with the unfortunate exception of this year), and Focus on Health Professional Education (FoHPE) is one of the key journals in which I aspire to be published."
