Meet one of our newest members, Tino Mercado.

Tino is a periodontist, clinician, and health educator with over 25 years of experience. He currently serves as President of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP, 2024-2026). In 2021, he received the Australian Dental Association (ADA) Service Medallion Award for “his contribution to clinical periodontics, clinical periodontal research and dedication to teaching.” He was also honoured with the “Global Filipino Icon Award” for his “pioneering excellence in oral health research, education and clinical innovation” by Global Filipino Magazine.

Tino is an Associate Professor at both the University of Otago and the University of Sydney. He operates private practices at London Street Specialists, Dunedin and Lake Hayes Queenstown, providing periodontal and implant services across New Zealand’s South Island. His publications address periodontal prognostication, periodontal medicine, mucogingival surgical techniques, and bone regeneration. His PhD research focused on regenerative management of peri-implantitis and recession around teeth and implants using autogenous and alternative tissues with biologically active products. His clinical research on maxillary anterior ridge preservation received the Best Clinical Research award at the 2021 Osteology World Symposium.
