ANZAHPE MASTER CLASS

Educators as Team Coaches: Embedding low fidelity simulations into programs – lessons from Ted Lasso

Dr Victoria Brazil

High performance teams all have coaches, so why shouldn’t healthcare teams? Educators are well placed to be coaches, with skills in observing performance, setting goals and giving feedback. Team coaching requires another layer – skills in the science of teams - structure and function - and how to shape team culture.

In this session we’ll explore how teams work (or don’t) and consider how we can be team coaches; taking lessons from Formula one, jewellery thieves, special forces, and Ted Lasso! Our aim is to help teams be better at their work, and at improving their own teams and systems.

Victoria Brazil is an emergency physician and educator.

She is Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Simulation at the Gold Coast Health Service, and leads the Bond University Translational Simulation Collaborative. Victoria’s main interests are in connecting education with patient care - through translational simulation for healthcare, and in developing high performing teams.

Victoria is an enthusiast in the social media and #FOAMed world (@SocraticEM). She is co-producer of Simulcast and she hosts the Harvard Macy Institute podcast. She also serves as a faculty member with the Harvard Macy Institute.
