    ANZCEN CLINICIAN EDUCATOR INCUBATOR

EOIs are open to join the 2023 Clinician Educator Incubator for Clinical Educators working in critical care.

The Incubator is a professional development programme for clinicians engaged in health professions education, with a focus on the critical care specialties. The one year programme enrolls participants into a mentored digital community of practice.

If you are a clinician who wants to develop as a scholarly educator, apply best practices and innovations to health professions education, and help lead critical care education in the 21st century, we invite you to work with us and join our community.

Participants will be selected for their demonstrated commitment to health professions education and their potential to develop as Clinician Educators. Through collaboration and mentorship, they will develop their expertise and engage in education projects that will benefit our community of educators, our learners, and ultimately help improve patient care.

AIPPEN IPE Session 2: Is the presence and visibility of collaborative practice a significant positive contributor to the “culture” of a placement and therefore the learning environment?

    Guest Presenter: Dale Sheehan

Meet colleagues in our conversation-based session that will be kick-started by Megan Anakin and Heidi Waldron. Participants will be encouraged to draw on their own experiences to make connections and exchange ideas.

In this session, presenter Dale Sheehan draws on her experience conducting interviews with both undergraduate and new graduate doctors as part of a project to explore the culture of a range of clinical placements seeking to make visible the key features of each placement.

In this study Dale recognises three perspectives on culture and seeks to explore them all in the context of clinical learning environments. Practice perspective, such as "How things are done here!" is the key perspective on culture that Dale considers in this session.

The initial presentation will share some of the responses from this series of interviews which will be chosen to represent the range of responses and the range of ward cultures described.

    Questions we will focus on:

    1. Do these represent the variety of cultured that you encounter in your clinical placements?

    2. What simple things might we do to increase clinical IP engagement ?

    3. Are we underestimating the peer support collaborative practice can provide students and first year practitioners and can we harness this?

    About Dale

Dale Sheehan is an educator and researcher in interprofessional education, predominately with new graduates, creating opportunities to harness clinical learning opportunities. She has trained clinical educators on interprofessional education at the postgraduate level.

We anticipate that you will leave with at least one new idea to explore, and widen your network of colleagues with interests in interprofessional education.

This session is FREE  to attend and a recording will be available on the AIPPEN page of the ANZAHPE website following the event.

            Ottawa 2024
            Assessment: Near and far

            WHEN: 25-28 February 2024
            WHERE: Melbourne, Australia

Yes! The Ottawa Conference is coming “Down Under” to Australia for its third visit. With previous conferences in 2008 in Melbourne (fondly known as Ozzawa) followed by Perth in 2016, we are delighted to be welcoming back old friends and extending this welcome to new ones too.

If you are involved in assessment of health practitioners, we would love you to join us in Melbourne. The ways that you are involved in assessment may be diverse and possibly include the following:

Assessment from a policy, research and practice perspective.

Assessment at any stage of the learning journey – from student selection to practitioner CPD.

Assessment using any modality and for any domain of practice.

The theme for Ottawa2024 will be “Assessment: Near and Far”. This theme reflects some of the major challenges for assessment in health professional education into the future and will, we hope, inspire you to participate.

One of those key challenges will include where we assess – is it in remote and rural contexts with their own particular challenges and how near or far will the assessment occur in proximity to the patient and clinical practice? Perhaps one of the greatest challenges to assessment ever – how authentic can it be and how can we use it to reassure the public that we are preparing safe, caring and competent practitioners?

The “Near and Far” theme encompasses the current debates around modality of assessment – what can be and should be assessed online versus what should be assessed in person?

We’re hoping the theme also conveys our support for and interest in promoting significant international collaborations – whether through activities such as the international consensus statements movement (from 2010 onwards) or through partnerships in policy, practice and research – established and emerging.
